Alf Erling Porsild was a Danish-Canadian botanist and Arctic explorer who made significant contributions to our understanding of the flora of the Canadian Arctic. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on January 17, 1901, and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1920. He studied botany at the University of Alberta and the University of Minnesota, and in 1926 he joined the staff of the National Herbarium of Canada in Ottawa.

Porsild's first major Arctic expedition was in 1928, when he traveled to the Northwest Territories with the Canadian Arctic Expedition. He spent the next several years exploring the Canadian Arctic, collecting plant specimens and making detailed observations of the vegetation. In 1939, he was appointed Curator of the National Herbarium of Canada, a position he held until his retirement in 1966.
