Early Life

Joan of Arc was born in the village of Domrémy, France, in 1412. Her parents were poor peasants, and she grew up working on the family farm. Joan was a devout Catholic, and she often spent time in the local church, praying and meditating. In 1425, when Joan was 13 years old, she began to have visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine. These visions told her that she was chosen by God to lead the French army to victory in the Hundred Years' War.

The Hundred Years' War

The Hundred Years' War was a long and bloody conflict between France and England. It began in 1337, and it lasted for over 100 years. By the time Joan of Arc appeared on the scene, the French were losing badly. The English had captured much of northern France, and they were poised to take Paris. Joan's visions gave the French people new hope. She convinced the Dauphin, Charles VII, to give her command of the French army. Joan led the French army to a series of victories, including the Battle of Orléans in 1429. This victory turned the tide of the war in favor of the French.

Capture and Execution

In 1430, Joan was captured by the English at the Battle of Compiègne. She was tried for heresy and witchcraft, and she was eventually burned at the stake in Rouen, France. Joan was only 19 years old at the time of her death.

Legacy

Joan of Arc is remembered as one of the most inspiring figures in French history. She was a courageous leader who fought for her country and her faith. Joan's legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
